In April, 1917 in the Champaran district of Bihar state, Gandhiji started an agitation for the rights of farmers, which later came to be known as Champaran Satyagraha.

In fact, farmers of Champaran district were forced to cultivate indigo by British planters, due to which the farmers were suffering a lot. At the same time, the British were taking advantage of the compulsion of the farmers by increasing the rent, due to which Gandhiji opened his front against the British.

It was the first Satyagraha in the country under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, which gave a new edge to India's freedom struggle. When Mahatma Gandhi returned to India in 1894 from South Africa. Shortly afterwards he met Rajkumar Shukla, a farmer in Lucknow and a college teacher. Who apprised Gandhi ji about the atrocities with Champaran farmers, indigo cultivation and tinkathia system and invited them to come to Champaran district of Bihar, Gandhiji at first refused to go to Champaran for his Kolkata tour But he later agreed to go to Champaran.

After this, Gandhiji reached Champaran on April 10, 1917, along with many companions including Braj Kishore Prasad, Narayan Sinha, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Ramanathavi, and seeing the plight of the farmers here and then seeing the plight of the farmers of Champaran district, He started the Champaran Satyagraha movement against the British on 17 April 1917 with the aim of getting his rights.

At the same time, when the British saw the growing influence of Gandhiji, they got nervous and they filed a case against Gandhiji.

Along with this, the District Magistrate also asked him to leave Champaran district and go back several times. During this time Gandhiji was also accused of instigating the farmers. But Gandhiji did not listen to a single thing of the British and he continued to work in the interest of the Champaran farmers, walking on the path of truth and non-violence.

Seeing the power and influence of Gandhiji, the British rule got scared and he not only released Gandhiji from jail but also formed a committee in the interest of the farmers of Champaran and put Gandhiji as a member in it and after that Gandhiji Opened up the farmers 'troubles and recommended to return the farmers' land and abolish the Tinkathia system.

In this way, the tinkathia system which has been running for many years could be ended and 25 percent of the money illegally recovered from the farmers was returned.

Under this system, the farmers of Champaran were forced to cultivate indigo, about 3 out of the 20 parts of their cultivated land and were forcibly taxed by the British. At the same time, the rent imposed on the land was determined according to the caste of the landowner.

Actually, at that time the upper caste had to pay much less than the lower caste. During this time, many evils were spread in the society.

Champaran Satyagraha in the interest of farmers was the first Satyagraha movement of India under Gandhiji. Apart from Gandhiji, Janakdhari Prasad, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Anugraha Narayan Singh, J.B. Kripalani also played his important role.

The British were first compelled by the British to cultivate indigo, and then took advantage of their compulsions to collect rent, which led to the movement. During the Champaran Satyagraha, Gandhiji was arrested for causing unrest in Champaran district.
